Overview

Over the past 40 years, the nation’s communication system has undergone a remarkable transformation, from Ma Bell owning your home’s only telephone that hung on the wall outside the kitchen to low-earth orbit satellites sending gigabytes of wireless data to everyone everywhere all the time. In its wake came the Internet, streaming media, remote work, social media, isolation, artificial intelligence, a mental health crisis, and more.

Well, get ready for round two. Over the next several decades, changes in the nation’s electrical system are poised to transform our society as profoundly as the digital revolution.  These changes will transform how and where we work, how we design our buildings and communities, how we move from place to place, how we pay for energy and from whom, the environment… and then things really get crazy.

• Understand the shift in energy economics and why renewables are now the only viable path forward.
• Examine how rising demand from EVs, AI, and climate pressures may increase grid load by up to 40% in the next 3–5 years.
• Assess how policies and permitting hurdles affect the speed of bringing new energy sources online.
• Consider the potential collapse of the traditional utility model and what could replace it.
• Reimagine community design in a future with abundant energy but scarce resources.
